Supplies, Service &
Maintenance for Your Copier
Buying Supplies & Parts
When buying supplies and parts you must remember that supplies and parts are specific
for the make and also for the model. If you do not use the exact specified products severe
damage will most likely rapidly occur.
Parts and supplies are generally available for up to 10 to 15 years after the machine
is manufactured. However towards the later years as production and inventories decrease
prices will start to rise.
Yield and lifespan of supplies and parts depend on 1) copier make and model, 2) usage
and copy volume, 3) condition of machine, 4) periodic maintenance, and 5) quality of
supplies and parts purchased.

OEM verses Aftermarket Supplies and Parts
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) parts are either manufactured directly by the
copier company itself or by a factory authorized contractor. OEM supplies and parts are
the standard and generally premium priced.
Aftermarket parts and supplies offer you the consumer a chance for considerable cost
savings. And as with many aftermarket parts available, they will actually out perform OEM
parts. Quality of the aftermarket item will range from slightly substandard, to a much
improved quality with a greater yield/lifespan over the OEM part.
You may think that all franchised factory copier dealers use only OEM. Well, they might
want you the consumer to believe that, but it is often far from the truth. Many factory
dealers often prefer to use the superior / extended yield type of aftermarket parts on
machines under Service Contract, because of their reduced price and increased performance.
Basic consumable supplies that most photocopiers require are 1) Toner, 2) Developer, 3)
Fuser Oil or Cleaning Rollers. The basic consumable machine parts are 1) Drum, 2) Fuser
Rollers, 3) Cleaning Blades, 4) various lamps, 5) clutches, and 6) paper feed tires.
Service, Repair, and PMs
As with any piece of equipment copiers will require maintenance and repairs. Copiers
especially because their inherent design and the desire for good copy quality. The lighter
duty the machine is and any increased copy volume will affect the frequency of service.
Photocopiers have many consumable supplies and parts. We all know that the Toner is a
consumable supply. Well, there is also often developer, and such parts as the Drum, Fuser
Rollers, Cleaning Blades, Paper Feed Tires, various lamps, clutches, and other small
components. All of the above mentioned consumable copier parts and supplies have a limited
service life, and as they degrade, they will drastically affect machine performance and
copy quality.
The frequency that a particular machine requires service repair or Preventative /
Periodic Maintenance (PM) varies. It can generally be gauged by the factory designated
monthly copy volume figures. The higher this number is, the less frequent the machine will
be in need of service. Also environmental and general operating conditions will greatly
affect the time between Service PM's.
